Growing Closer to God Through Honest Prayer
As you begin to pray, be honest with yourself. Let your feelings spill out, and be honest with God. He already knows what's in your heart, and He welcomes you to come to Him just as you are.
We all have emotional moments and breakdowns. We are human. The important thing is to acknowledge those feelings without allowing them to control us. Facing your emotions with courage and bringing them before God opens the door for healing, freedom, and peace.
There have been times in my life where I didn't want to pray. I still do have those times. In those moments, I'm reminded of the word of God, pray without ceasing. So that means that it doesn't matter how you feel, pray anyway. As you begin to pray, you will feel the weight lifted and joy and comfort comes. Release your burdens, cast your cares! Allow God to fill you will his spirit again and again and again. Which, he is glad to do. Ask yourself the questions below to help you with your daily prayer life.
Ask yourself:
-
When was the last time I was completely honest with God in prayer?
-
What emotions have I been holding onto instead of surrendering to Him?
-
What is one area of my life where I need God's healing today?
- Do you fast and pray? To be delivered in some areas, you must fast. Fasting breaks down your flesh and strengthens your spirit to do the will of God.
As you pray each day, consider writing down your prayers in a journal. Over time, record how God answers them. Looking back on His faithfulness can strengthen your faith and remind you that He is always at work, even when you can't see it.
Reflection Questions:
-
Do you keep a prayer journal? If not, what has stopped you from starting one?
-
Can you remember a prayer that God answered in a way you didn't expect?
-
How has seeing God's faithfulness encouraged your walk with Him?
Always acknowledge God and His incredible love for you. Spend time listening as well as speaking. One of the greatest blessings of prayer is learning to recognize God's gentle voice and loving direction. As you grow in your relationship with Him, you'll find that the more you pray, the more you desire to pray. Prayer deepens your closeness with God and fills your heart with joy as you serve Him.
Think About It:
-
When do you feel closest to God?
-
How do you recognize His voice in your life?
-
What distractions keep you from spending time with Him?
If you don't know Jesus as your Savior, you can begin today with a simple prayer:
"Lord, I repent of my sins. I believe in Jesus, Your Son, who died for me and rose again. Today I choose to follow Him and live for You. Amen."
After making that decision, continue growing in your faith by praying daily, reading God's Word, fasting as He leads, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide your life. Find a Bible-believing church where you can grow alongside other believers who will encourage and strengthen your faith.
